Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League after suffering a knee injury in the opening match of the 2023 season against Chennai Super Kings on Friday.
At the Narendra Modi stadium, Williamson injured his right knee while attempting a catch on the boundary line.
The winners said Williamson will return to New Zealand for further assessment.
“It is sad to lose Kane to injury so early in the tournament. We wish him a speedy recovery, with the hope of seeing him in action very soon,” said Gujarat Titans Director of Cricket Vikram Solanki.
A substitute for the right-handed batter will be determined by the Gujarat Titans, and an announcement will be issued in due time.
During the 13th over of CSK’s innings, the 32-year-old was wounded after a severe fall while fielding on the boundary and hobbled off the field.
Williamson, making his debut for the Gujarat Titans, intercepted a ball that could have been hit for six by CSK starter Ruturaj Gaikwad. He did well to palm the ball into the field of play before it ricocheted off the boundary lines, but he landed awkwardly and gripped his right knee in pain after landing awkwardly on the ground.
After receiving on-field treatment, he was removed from the game and did not return to bat.
B. Sai Sudharsan was first introduced as a replacement fielder before replacing Williamson in the Titans’ playing eleven in accordance with the Impact Player rule.
