The trailer for Ponniyin Selvan 2, the much-awaited second installment of Mani Ratnam’s magnum epic, was presented by the filmmakers during a big trailer launch ceremony in Chennai today.

The Ponniyin Selvan films are based on the classic novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy on the life of Raja Raja Chozhan.

Mani Ratnam’s epic returns for a final flourish

The first film, set in the 10th century and written by Mani Ratnam, Jeyamohan, and Kumaravel, depicted how a power struggle between two branches of the ruling Chola dynasty led to severe rifts. The second film is anticipated to explore the events that led to the Cholas being the most rich and powerful empire on the continent, as well as one of the most successful and long-reigning in history.

The film has a large ensemble of A-list actors, including Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, and Jayam Ravi. Ashwin Kakumanu, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Sarath Kumar, Prabhu, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Parthiban, Lal, and Mohan Raman are also part of the cast.
