After a day-long confrontation between the AAP-led Delhi government and Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, who were once again at each other’s throats today, the latter signed on the files extending power subsidies to nearly 46 lakh people in the national capital for the upcoming year.

Power Minister Atishi announced earlier in the day that subsidies will cease on Friday, as Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has not yet approved the extension.

“The subsidies we provide to 46 million people will end today.” People will receive inflated bills beginning on Monday without a subsidy,” said Delhi Power Minister Atishi at a press conference, accusing the LG for resting on the crucial file despite the AAP government’s approval of the budget to continue the subsidy in the coming year.

The office of Mr. Saxena advised Atishi to refrain from engaging in “unnecessary politicking” The LG questioned why the decision was delayed until April 4 when the deadline was April 15 and why he was not sent the file until April 11.

“Power Minister is advised to refrain from unnecessary politicking and fraudulent allegations without foundation against LG. She must cease deceiving others with false statements… Why create drama on April 13 by composing a letter and holding a press conference today?” A statement from the office of the Lieutenant Governor is read.

After 24 hours, Atishi sought a five-minute electricity subsidy meeting with Mr. Saxena but received no response.

“This subsidy’s budget has been approved by the Vidhan Sabha. “The government has funds available for subsidies, but we cannot use them,” she said.

The AAP administration in Delhi provides free electricity to consumers who utilize less than 200 units per month. Those utilizing between 201 and 400 units receive a 50% subsidy, limited at 850.

Last year, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that only consumers who register would receive power subsidies. More than 48 million out of more than 58 million domestic consumers have applied for power subsidies, according to official data.
In its budget for 2023-24, the AAP has allotted 3,250 billion rupees for electricity subsidies.
