The trailer for The Trial began with Kajol coming to terms with her spouse, portrayed by Jisshu Sengupta, being arrested for accepting sexual favors as bribes to influence verdicts. In a fit of rage, she slaps him for spying on her before accompanying him in a police van as he is taken away after the news breaks.

Moments earlier, as she surveyed the media congregated in front of her home, Kajol stated in Hindi, “A mistake repeated multiple times is not a mistake.” It is a decision.”

Next, Noyonika, played by Kajol, does something she hasn’t done in years: she returns to the courtroom. As she pursues justice for herself and her family, she is judged by both fellow attorneys and the general public.

Kajol on her role

Kajol told Variety about the series, “Complexity is what defines a character for me, and the layers surrounding Noyonika were what drew me to this role when it was first presented.”

Noyonika felt personal, and I immediately felt protective of her, which reinforced my decision to make ‘The Trial – Pyaar, Kanoon, Dhoka’ on Disney+ Hotstar my first foray into the extended format. Suparn Varma has created a world where the vulnerability of his characters collides with the harshness of life’s circumstances.

As I did, the audience will sympathize with Noyonika as she makes difficult decisions.
